Both Narai and Ariki are described as being Egyptian Mao in their passports. Which is strange, seeing they look nothing alike at all, except the usual cat stuff – whiskers, two eyes, two ears, four legs, tail, and so on. Maybe Egyptian Meow would have been better, ‘cos that they can do. Meow, that is. Mao makes them sound like communist dictacats, which they aren’t. Although Narai is the stronger-headed of the two, and sometimes Ariki lays down the law, generally they are pretty law-abiding catizens and don’t hassle each other or Dada too much.

Dada was a teacher at a college, but he didn’t see himself as an academic. Which is odd, ‘cos he thinks a lot, and since Mamma left, he does a lot of his thinking out loud, which Narai and Ariki pick up on. There’s a good phrasal verb. Pick up on…
